You probably know it when you feel it.
Empathy that is. That feeling that someone really gets you. They understand and genuinely, non judgmentally care about what’s going on.
But sometimes, another person’s response feels… well bad. No matter how sympathetic they are, it just feels bad. That can be sympathy.
After years of working with clients I’ve learned that this distinction is very powerful (even though sometimes it feels subtle). And when you recognize the difference it can really change your perspective. And then sometimes, this can really improve the nature of all your relationships. Even the one you have with yourself.
