Why psychotherapy?psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is also called therapy or counseling.  It helps you learn new ways to manage problems and relationships. And, it helps you heal from past hurts. Millions of people visit therapists every year.  Therapy is usually time-limited and goal specific.  Therapy focuses on specific goals you want to accomplish and the best way to get there.

But does it work?

It does.

Psychotherapy (or therapy or counseling) has been proven to increase psychological well-being. While as an industry, we have NOT always been good at research.  We’re getting better. So much better.  And the research is clearly proving the effectiveness of therapy.

I use Evidence-Based Practices (EBP).   EBP means that what we do in therapy is based on research. Specifically, on 1) what you want to achieve 2) the best available evidence and 3) my clinical experience. And while there’s gray in the actual doing of this, the foundation is science and research.

For couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy, aka EFT. I am an ICEEFT Certified EFT Therapist, Supervisor and founder of the EFT community in St. Louis.  Substantial research shows the effectiveness of EFT with 70-75% of couples moving from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% report significant improvement.

When clients have unresolved trauma, I practice Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). I am rostered and fully trained in TF-CBT through MoActs in this evidence based treatment.

Other interventions I use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Integrated Treatment for Complex Trauma and the newest advances in Neuroscience. Check out the Science Page if you’d like more info.

What about using my insurance?

Using insurance for mental health services can be a double-edged sword.

In order to receive mental health benefits, you typically need to have a diagnosis of a mental health disorder. If you’re seeking family or couple’s counseling, one of you would receive a diagnosis. This becomes part of your medical record. It can affect your premiums on future health and life insurance.

If you do want to use your insurance benefits, I’m an out-of-network provider. This means you access those benefits directly through your insurance.  I provide you with a receipt, and you submit the receipt to your insurance for reimbursement. By working with an out-of-network provider, you’re able to access out of network mental health insurance benefits. And I’m not required to share intimate details with your insurance.

What does therapy cost?

My fee is $225 per 55-minute session. Some of my clients get reimbursed by their insurance company based on their policy. I also offer a limited number of sliding scale slots based on income.  Therapy is often underused. So, it’s important to me that I’m available to help people with different financial needs. Clients pay at the beginning of the session day. Many clients use their health savings accounts.
